Happy St V’s day! Personally I think the best thing about the 14th of February is the amount of chocolate that will go on sale on the 15th of February at reduced prices πŸ™‚

Rather than get all mushy I’d like to share a video that won first place in the peoples choice section of the 2012 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge Video section. It is of Alya Red, a new computer model of the heart that marries modern medical imaging techniques with high-powered computing. What I love is that even after centuries of study scientists are still largely baffled by the heart’s complex electrical choreography, just proving that we are complex beings with a universe still undiscovered in each and every one one of us.

Alya Red: A Computational heart

And if you want to indulge in the corporatised mush-fest that is powered by sales of red roses then all power to you! My tip for a romantic evening would be (if you are in Hobart) trot down to Wursthaus Kitchen in Salamanca, pick up some gorgeous pre-prepared food, add some plonk of your choice (and maybe some chocolates from Norman and Dann around the corner) and surprise your significant other with a restaurant quality meal in the comfort of your own home.
Don’t have a significant other? Rejoice! You will have all that yummy food to yourself tonight and won’t have to share the cheap chocolate tomorrow πŸ™‚
